A good backlink strategy has to be simple because you don’t have a lot of time to waste on technical stuff or navigating through several different tactics on the web. It also has to be simple because if you ever want to outsource your system, you want it to be as simple as possible.

You need patience when you are starting a good backlink strategy. This is because it will generally take some time before all of your backlinking efforts are discovered by Google and it’s rivals. Some of my backlinks hadn’t been indexed for up to 2 months after I made them!
Control
The last thing that you want is to have someone delete all (or a majority) of the backlinks you’ve built to your site. This is what could happen if you spend a lot of time getting links from networks that may not be here tomorrow. A good backlink strategy will let you have at least some control over your inbound links.
Systematic
A step by step process is always good. Plus, it can be reproduced in the same way each time. And, with a system, you won’t leave out any steps.
Step 1. Your good backlink strategy should always begin with keyword optimized content on your own site. If you haven’t done this, it’s a simple enough thing to do some keyword research and go back to your posts/pages and plug in some good keywords.
For Google to serve up a page in the search results, they need all the information that you can give. You will want your keywords in your content because you’re going to be linking back with keyword anchor text from other sites. It’s the anchor text on the incoming links that gives Google some information about your page.
Step 2. In another post wrote about backlinking with article marketing. This is a super dead simple start to a good backlink strategy. EzineArticles is one place that you will want to start your article marketing. They are established, well known, and well respected.
When writing articles, it’s not the article content that you need to try and rank for, it’s the resource box on the bottom of the article that’s important. This is where you will add your anchor text backlink. As your articles get syndicated and viewed, you get more backlinks.
After your article is approved and published on Ezine, then post it to other directories. You can spin it or change it up a little. But, you want it to be published on ezine first before you do this.
Step 3. Start web 2.0 blogs/pages and link back to those specific keyword optimized pages on your blog. You can use fresh content, you can use top 10 lists, you can use content from CNN and comment on it in your web 2.0 site. It doesn’t matter as long as you are linking back to your keyword optimized page on your blog.
Step 4. Bookmark all your articles and web 2.0 properties on as many social bookmark sites as possible. Use SocialMarker or SocialPoster to make this task a little easier.
Step 5. Start making relevant (read the post and give your opinion on it) comments on different blogs. It helps if you do this on relevant blogs. However, diversity is okay too. I have found that making comments on a variety of blogs hasn’t hurt my rankings at all.
Step 6. Rinse and repeat with each new blog post/article submission/web 2.0 page/blog comment.
This is the basics of a good backlink strategy. Don’t get hung up on which tools to use at this point. You’re going to testing each tool anyway to see what’s working. Pick a few good article directories, blog platforms, you’ll want to use Squidoo and HubPages, and a few social bookmarking sites.
This outline covers each important quality. It targets specific keywords. It emphasizes anchor text backlinks. It’s comprehensive because you’re getting backlinks from across the website from different types of sites. And, it’s simple because it goes step by step and can be easily reproduced!
